The ECS card is the gold standard for electricians on UK construction sites. Find out which grade you need, what qualifications are required, and how the JIB grading system works.

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) card is the construction industry's proof of competence for electricians. Managed by the Joint Industry Board (JIB), it's a legal and practical requirement for site access on virtually every major UK construction project.

Who Needs an ECS Card?

Any electrician or electrotechnical operative working on a UK construction site should hold an ECS card. This includes:

  • Installation Electricians
  • Approved Electricians
  • Data Communications Installers
  • Highway Electrical Operatives
  • Fire and Security System Installers

ECS Card Grades

The ECS card grade you hold reflects your qualifications and level of competence:

Grade Qualification Required Card Colour
ECS Apprentice Current apprenticeship Red
Installation Electrician NVQ Level 3 + AM2 Blue
Approved Electrician NVQ Level 3 + 2 years post-qualification Gold
Electrotechnical Technician Higher qualification Gold
Supervisor/Manager NVQ Level 3 + supervisory experience Gold/Black

The AM2 Assessment

The AM2 (Achievement Measurement 2) is a practical end-point assessment that all electrical apprentices must pass before qualifying for the Installation Electrician grade. It tests:

  • Cable installation
  • Containment systems
  • Fault finding and diagnosis
  • Inspection and testing

How to Apply for Your ECS Card

  1. Complete your electrical qualification (apprenticeship + AM2)
  2. Pass the ECS Health, Safety & Environment Test
  3. Apply through the JIB ECS website with your qualification certificates
  4. Your card will be issued within 7–14 working days
