The CISRS scheme offers a clear progression route for scaffolders. Here's how to climb from the Scaffolding Labourer card all the way to Advanced Scaffolder — and what it takes at each stage.

Scaffolding is one of the most skilled and safety-critical trades in UK construction. The CISRS scheme provides a structured, step-by-step route to becoming a fully qualified scaffolder — here's how the progression works.

The CISRS Card Progression Ladder

1. CISRS Scaffolding Labourer (Green Card)

  • Course: Part 1 CISRS Scaffold Training (2-day NASC-approved course)
  • Requirement: Pass the CITB HS&E Operative Test
  • Card Validity: 2 years

This is the entry point for anyone new to scaffolding. The green card allows you to work as a scaffolding labourer under supervision while you build your experience.

2. CISRS Scaffolder (Blue Card) — Part 1 & Part 2

  • Courses: CISRS Part 1 (5 days) and Part 2 (5 days) — must be completed through NASC-approved training centres
  • Requirement: Minimum 6 months documented site experience between Part 1 and Part 2
  • NVQ: NVQ Level 2 in Accessing Operations and Rigging (Scaffolding)
  • Card Validity: 5 years

3. CISRS Advanced Scaffolder (Gold Card)

  • Course: CISRS Advanced Scaffold Training course (10 days)
  • Requirement: Minimum 3 years post-Part 2 experience as a Scaffolder
  • NVQ: NVQ Level 3 in Accessing Operations and Rigging (Scaffolding)
  • Card Validity: 5 years

4. CISRS Scaffold Inspector Card

  • Course: Scaffold Inspection Training Course (SITC)
  • Requirement: Hold Advanced Scaffolder card + relevant experience
  • Purpose: Authorises the holder to formally inspect and sign off scaffold structures

CPD and Renewal

All CISRS cards require holders to demonstrate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on renewal. This ensures scaffolders remain up to date with the latest standards and working practices.
