Both courses are CITB-backed and widely required, but they serve very different roles. We break down the key differences, who each course is designed for, and how they fit into your CSCS card journey.

The SMSTS and SSSTS are two of the most widely recognised construction safety courses in the UK. Both are developed by CITB and both are frequently specified by clients and contractors — but they're designed for very different roles.

SSSTS — Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme

Who it's for: Frontline supervisors, foremen, charge-hands, and gang leaders.

Duration: 2 days

What it covers:

  • Legal duties and responsibilities of a supervisor
  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Accident reporting and investigation
  • Site inductions and toolbox talks
  • Emergency procedures

Cost: Typically £200–£350 per person, depending on provider.

Certificate validity: 5 years (renewal via 1-day refresher course)

The SSSTS is a stepping stone for workers moving into supervisory responsibilities for the first time. It gives a solid grounding in health and safety law and practical site supervision skills.

SMSTS — Site Management Safety Training Scheme

Who it's for: Site managers, project managers, and contracts managers.

Duration: 5 days (can be split across 2 weeks)

What it covers:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act and CDM Regulations
  • Management of sub-contractors and the supply chain
  • Environmental management and waste
  • Site welfare requirements
  • Accident prevention and investigation at management level

Cost: Typically £600–£1,000 per person, depending on provider.

Certificate validity: 5 years (renewal via 2-day refresher)

Which Should You Choose?

  • If you're a supervisor or foreman → SSSTS
  • If you're a site manager or project manager → SMSTS
  • If you're progressing toward a management role → SSSTS first, then SMSTS as you advance

Both courses qualify for a CITB grant, which can significantly reduce the cost for eligible employers.
