The CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test is required for almost every UK construction card. Our complete guide covers booking, test formats, revision tips, and what to expect on the day.

The CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test is the foundation of the UK construction card system. Before you can apply for a CSCS, CPCS, CISRS, or most other construction cards, you must first pass this test. Here's everything you need to know.

What is the CITB HS&E Test?

Developed and managed by CITB (the Construction Industry Training Board), the HS&E Test assesses your knowledge of health, safety, and environmental practices on UK construction sites. It is administered through a network of test centres across the UK and can also be taken at select online proctored venues.

Test Types: Choosing the Right Version

There are several different versions of the test, designed for different roles:

Test Type Who It's For
Operative General construction site workers
Specialist Specialist trades (e.g., demolition, tunnelling)
Manager/Professional Site managers, surveyors, engineers
Highway Electrical Operations Electrical workers on highways

Critical: Applying for the wrong test type will mean your result cannot be used for your card application. Always check the requirements for your specific card scheme before booking.
