Everything you need to know about getting your CSCS card — from choosing the right card colour to passing the CITB HS&E Test and submitting your application.
The CSCS card is the most recognised proof of competence in the UK construction industry. If you're starting out or looking to renew, here's everything you need to know.
What is a CSCS Card?
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card demonstrates that the holder has the appropriate qualifications and training for their specific role on a construction site. Most major contractors require all site personnel to hold a valid card before accessing site.
Which CSCS Card Do You Need?
CSCS issues 13 different card colours, each representing a different level of qualification and occupation:
- Green Card — Construction Site Visitor / Labourer
- Red Card — Trainee / Apprentice
- Blue Card — Skilled Worker (NVQ Level 2)
- Gold Card — Supervisory / Advanced Craft (NVQ Level 3)
- Black Card — Manager / Senior Manager
Step-by-Step: How to Get Your CSCS Card
Step 1: Pass the CITB HS&E Test
Before applying for most CSCS cards, you must first pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. Choose the version that matches your role — Operative, Specialist, Manager, or Professional.
Step 2: Gain Your NVQ/SVQ
Complete the relevant NVQ or SVQ qualification for your trade and level. The level of qualification determines which card colour you're eligible for.
Step 3: Apply Online
Visit the CSCS website to apply online. You'll need to provide your NVQ certificate reference number and your CITB test pass certificate.
Step 4: Receive Your Card
Once approved, your card will be posted to you. Most cards are valid for 5 years, after which you'll need to renew.
Tips for a Successful Application
- Book your HS&E test early — popular test centres fill up quickly.
- Use official CITB revision materials — the free official app is highly recommended.
- Check your NVQ is on the CSCS Approved Qualifications list before applying.
- Renew early — don't let your card lapse as it may require you to re-sit the HS&E test.
